What is the STAR method?

STAR is the standard framework for behavioral interview answers: Situation (set the scene), Task (your specific responsibility), Action (the steps you personally took), and Result (what changed, ideally with numbers). Interviewers at companies like Amazon, Google, and Meta are trained to listen for exactly this structure.

How this grader works — no magic

This is a transparent, rule-based checker that runs entirely in your browser. No AI, no server, nothing is uploaded. It scores each STAR component 0–10 using these signals:

  • Cue phrases for each component ("when I was...", "I was responsible for...", "as a result...") and whether they appear in STAR order
  • First-person past-tense action verbs ("I led", "I built", "I shipped")
  • Quantification — numbers, percentages, dollar amounts, timeframes
  • Length and balance (a spoken answer is typically 150–300 words)
  • Penalties for passive voice, filler words, and "we"-heavy answers

Honest caveat: it checks how your answer is built, not whether the story is true, relevant, or impressive. A well-structured weak story can outscore a poorly structured great one — use it as a structure check, not a content judge.
